Make your own Sammy Bag Dog Sling Carrier with this PDF Sewing Pattern! Perfect for the little dog who likes to tag along. Designed for dogs 4-8 pounds, this sling is for dogs who like being up high and near to you and will happily sit in an open sling carrier and not try to jump out. Sam loves to ride in her sling when we go shopping at the Farmer’s Market and other dog friendly places. Slings are great for crowded outdoor festivals when there are too many people to let your little one walk safely by your side, but they can still see what’s going on and interact with all the people!
Why spend hundreds on a boutique sling when you can choose your colors and materials and make your own?
Exterior fabric (Medium weight): 1 1/4 yards (You need the full 45” length for the strap, so you might want to ask for 1 1/3-1 1/2 yards.)
Lining fabric: 3/4 yard (1/2 yard if it is 54” wide fabric.)
Sew-in interfacing: 1 1/2 yards of 20” wide sew-in interfacing
Batting: 35”x45” craft sized package (or larger) or 1 yard of 45″ wide batting or fleece
Pellon Peltex or other similar heavyweight interfacing for bottom of sling: 8.5” x 4.5”
Rotary mat and rotary cutter or ruler and scissors (for measuring strap, no pattern piece included for strap)
Size 80 or 90 “sharp” or “microtex” needle recommended
Walking foot highly recommended
If using quilting cotton you will also need to add a layer of fusible interfacing.
Please measure your dog to make sure they are not too long or too big for the sling. For reference, Sammy is six pounds and 11” long from collar to tail.
Finished Size: Approximately 14″ wide, 8″ tall and 5″ deep with a 44″ long strap.
I love this pattern. I made it this afternoon for my 5.5 pound Chihuahua, and was amazed at how quickly it went together. I attribute this to the very thorough easy to follow instructions. I have been sewing for years, but I don't think I have ever encountered such detailed instructions. My bag looks very similar to the pictures. I used quilting cotton with extra fusible interfacing for the exterior and baby wale cord for the interior. Can't wait to make another one.
